How To Connect Two Computers - Windows Environment

Okay so why write about it? Well because there was once a time that i needed to know how to connect two computers together and I couldn't find any articles to help me and no links on the internet that had it in detail, so this is for the people that might experience the same.

So let's begin!

Firstly you will need to know how exactly your two PC's are going to connect. So here it is. The computers will connect directly to each other therefore no hub will be needed. For those of you that don't know, a hub is just a device that connects computers in a network via UTP STRAIGHT THROUGH cables.

The reason why I wrote straight through in caps is because this is not what you will be using to connect the two computers. Instead you will be using cross over cables. You can get this from a local computer store for relatively cheap. Or if you feel like doing work then make it, its really easy. If you need any help, then a Google search on how to make crossover cables will help alot. The reason why I don't tell you how, because I'm telling you how to connect two computers not create crossovers.

Anyways that's all the requirements you'll need, just a cross over cable. (Please note; if you buying or making a cross over, make sure it's at least cat5e UTP cables.)

Now that we got that out of the way, let's get to work!

Step1

On each computer, right click on "My Computer". Click Properties and then click on the "Computer Name" tab. Where it says "Computer description:" Give each computer a description (It must not be the same). Now click on the "change" so that you can change the name of the computer and create a workgroup. In the name option give it the same name you gave it for its description and in the workgroup section type in "my first network" (REMEMBER: Names of the computers should NOT be the same, BUT Workgroup names should be EXACT the same on both)
Now once you change these, you will be asked to restart the computer, so simply click yes or ok, whatever you are prompted with.

Step 2

After the computers are rebooted you will need to setup IP addresses for each computer. This is how:

On your desktop, look for the icon named "My Network Places". Now dpouble click it to open it.

Once open look on the left to see an option "view network connections" and click on it.

Now right click on local area network and click properties.

Where it says "This connection uses the following items:"; scroll down to "Iternet Protocol (TCP/IP)", click on it and click the properties button.

Now click on "Use the following IP address" and at "IP Address" type in an IP address e.g 192.168.0.1.

Although you do the same steps for both computers you must have different IP addresses so you can make the second computers IP address 192.168.0.2

After you set the IP addresses just press the tab button and you should get a number in the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, then press ok and wait a while and now you almost done!

Step 3

This is the easiest part; just take you cross over cable and connect to each computers network card RJ45 port. That's it you now will be able to see the computers in "My Network Places". You may start sharing files!

Classification of Computer:
In this section, we give the classification of computers by the type of data they process, Purpose and Physical Size.

Classification by Data Process:

Digital Computers:
The digital computers convert all input data into binary form; process the data in binary form but the processed information is converted back to decimal form. Most business applications use digital computers.

Analogue Computers:

Hybrid Computer:

Classification by Purpose
Using this basis, the two major classes are explained below:

Special Purpose Computers:
These are computers designed to carry out specific tasks. They have in-built programs, which are stored in a part of the main memory called Read Only Memory (ROM). The content of this type of memory can be accessed and executed by the computer but cannot be modified by the user. Examples are computers designed for use in digital watches.

General Purpose Computers:
These are computers that are not specifically designed or built for specific jobs. They solve various kinds of problems depending on the program or software loaded into them. Their main memory is typically, Random Access Memory (RAM). Example of these type of computers are found in business, commercial and scientific environment.

Classification by Physical Size:

Microcomputer: Microcomputer is at the lowest end of the computer range in terms of speed and storage capacity. Its CPU is a microprocessor. The first microprocessors were built of 8-bit microprocessor chips. The most common application of personal computers (PC) is in this category. The PC supports a number of input and output devices. Examples of microcomputers are IBM PC, PC-AT etc.

Mini Computer: This is design to support more than one user at a time. It possesses large storage capacity and operates at a higher speed. The mini computer is used in multi-user system in which various users can work at the same time. This type of computer is generally use for processing large volume of data in an organization. They are also use as servers in Local Area Networks (LAN).

Mainframes: These types of computers are generally 32-bit microprocessors. They operate at very high speed, have very large storage capacity and can handle the workload of many users. They are generally use in centralized databases. They are also use as controlling nodes in Wide Area Networks (WAN). Examples are DEC, ICL and IBM 3000 series.

Supercomputer: They are the fastest and most expensive machines. They have high processing speed compared to other computers. They have also multiprocessing technique. One of the ways in which supercomputers are built is by interconnecting hundreds of microprocessors. Supercomputers are mainly being used for weather forecasting, biomedical research, remote sensing, aircraft design and other areas of science and technology. The funny thing about this problem is that there isn't a consensus among computer scientists about what causes it. Some think that the processors themselves are fast enough but that they aren't adequately connected to each other through the pins that they use to transmit information among each other. Others think that the connections are fast enough, but that the signals collide when two signals try to go to the same processor at the same time.

One new and novel approach to conquering the problem (assuming that the later problem is in fact the cause) is to use lasers to transmit the signals among all of the processors. Currently data moves through computer systems via electrical impulses. Using electrical impulses to transmit data has two problems. First they require wires for transmission, and second they can interfere which each other. Lasers get around both problems. Lasers can be transmitted directly through the air, and they can pass right through each other.

Some researchers are taking advantage of these properties of lasers by designing a multiprocessor computer that uses lasers to send signals among conventional dual processor chips from Intel. Each chip will send the same signal to every other chip at the same time, and each chip is capable of receiving a laser signal. It's up to the receiving chip to sort out which packet of data is meant for it based on a unique set of information that comes with that signal. The chip then ignores all of the other signals that aren't addressed to it.

The result of this technology should theoretically be improved analysis of things that computers aren't very good at that humans can do with ease. These things include facial recognition, but the idea is that it could be done with computer speed.

The faster the CPU can do these calculations and give the correct answers, the faster the computer runs for the user. A fourth component is the RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is used as momentary working storage for the computer. We have different types of RAM memory with different speed, but it should match with your motherboard so that it can work properly. The more RAM you have in your computer, the better your computer will work.

The fifth component is the Hard drive. This is where you can store everything. Our material on the hard drive includes the operating system (Windows XP, etc), games, and different types of software, etc. over the year the capacity of the hard drive is continuously improving and in the interval of few years its capacity have gone from around 20MB to over 500GB and more. Sixth component is Cooling fans. Often most computers come with one cooling fan or it might have several. Its help to cool down the heat generated by others components, Such as power supply, the CPU, and some high-end video cards. The work of all of your cooling fans is to get this heat out of the case so that nothing overheats and breaks. While most of the noise you hear coming from a computer can be credited to the cooling fans, remember to be tolerant. The cooling fan is your friend!

Our Seventh and final component is the mixture of several different devices. These are the Cd-rom, DVD drives, floppy Drive and Backup devices such as external hard drive.
